![]() While in most cases the ISO code resembles an abbreviation of the currency's full English name, this is not always the case, as currencies such as the Algerian dinar, Aruban florin, Cayman dollar, renminbi, sterling and the Swiss franc have been assigned codes which do not closely resemble abbreviations of the official currency names. This eliminates the problem caused by the names dollar, franc, peso and pound being used in dozens of countries, each having significantly differing values. So Japan's currency code is JPY: "JP" for Japan and "Y" for yen. In the case of national currencies, the first two letters of the alpha code are the two letters of the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code and the third is usually the initial of the currency's main unit. Such changes usually originate from the formation of new countries, treaties between countries on shared currencies or monetary unions, or redenomination from an existing currency due to excessive inflation. Over time, new currencies are created and old currencies are discontinued. At the 17th session (February 1978), the related UN/ ECE Group of Experts agreed that the three-letter alphabetic codes for International Standard ISO 4217, "Codes for the representation of currencies and funds", would be suitable for use in international trade. In 1973, the ISO Technical Committee 68 decided to develop codes for the representation of currencies and funds for use in any application of trade, commerce or banking. ISO 4217 alpha codes are used on airline tickets and international train tickets to remove any ambiguity about the price. In many countries, the ISO 4217 alpha codes for the more common currencies are so well known publicly that exchange rates published in newspapers or posted in banks use only these to delineate the currencies, instead of translated currency names or ambiguous currency symbols. In the spring of 1962, the Associated Press reported that the Montana silos were being "rushed to completion," and that the first missiles, each loaded with "one megaton of death and destruction," would be ready by late summer. The Air Force began constructing the Nation's first Minuteman missile field on March 16, 1961. In addition, the region offered an established network of roads and, like much of the West, a large amount of easy-to-acquire public land. In the event of a nuclear accident or attack, the low population density near Malmstrom AFB would minimize civilian casualties. In 1960, the Air Force decided to locate the first Minuteman installation on the high plains around Great Falls, Montana, at Malmstrom AFB. But when early models of Minuteman missiles fell short of their intended 5,500-mile range, the Air Force selected sites in the northern part of the United States, which was closer to the Soviet Union. The Air Force initially considered putting Minuteman missiles as far south as Georgia, Texas, and Oklahoma. The silos were separated from the launch control facility and from each other by a distance of several miles. Each squadron was further subdivided into five smaller units, called "flights." A flight consisted of a single, manned, launch control facility, linked to ten, unmanned, underground, missile silos. Each of the missiles is a Minuteman III - two generations advanced from the Minuteman I that was in the Lima-02 silo in 1964. However, the Air Force soon determined that "for reasons of economy 150 launchers should be concentrated in a single area, whenever possible, and that no area should contain fewer than 50 missiles." Consequently, the Air Force organized the Minuteman force into a series of administrative units called "wings," each comprised of three or four 50-missile squadrons. Although South Dakotas Minuteman missiles now belong to history, the United States still has 400 Minutemans ready to launch from silos in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. The Air Force wanted to deploy Minuteman as a single, immense, "missile farm," equipped with as many as 1,500 missiles. All Minuteman LCCs operated under a policy requiring two people in the control center at all times. The six Minuteman missile fields were located in the states of Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, and Missouri. Abstract: Naturally acid saline systems with pH values between 17 and 4 are common on the Yilgarn Craton of southern Western Australia A combination of physical and chemical processes here yield a previously undescribed type of modern sedimentary environment Flooding, evapoconcentration, desiccation, and eolian transport at the surface, as well as influx of acid saline groundwaters, strongly influence these lakes Halite, gypsum, kaolinite, and iron oxides precipitate from acid hypersaline lake waters Shallow acid saline groundwaters affect the sediments of the lakes and associated mudflats, sandflats, channels, and dunes by precipitating early diagenetic halite, gypsum, iron oxides, clays, jarosite, and alunite These modern environments would likely yield a rock record composed mostly of bedded red siliciclastic and reworked gypsum sand, alternating with less common beds of bottom-growth gypsum and halite, with alteration by early diagenetic features diagnostic of acid saline waters This documentation of sedimentary processes and products of modern acid saline environments is an addition to the comparative sedimentology knowledge base and an expansion of the traditional models for classifying brines Implications include better interpretations of terrestrial redbeds and lithified martian strata, improved acid remediation methods, new models for the formation and occlusion of pores, and the new setting for finding previously undescribed extremophiles. ![]() I was less happy about the total absence of any text-editing features inside Readiris. I could combine multiple text regions into one, fix the app's occasional mistakes in identifying text and image regions, and click a button to de-skew a distorted image. I also liked the way a smaller toolbar at the right of the screen let me second-guess the app's interpretation of my documents' page layout. I like the way I could choose input and output options from a toolbar on the left of the screen. When I decided to perform a manual OCR operation-because the input material had a complicated layout that I knew was likely to cause problems in any automated operation, or because I wanted only to apply OCR to one part of a page-the whole process was equally straightforward. When I chose from the list of standard tasks, Readiris ran automatically, and the only things I needed to do were select an image file to read (or click a few buttons in a dialog to tell the program to read from my scanner) and give a name to the output file. These tasks include scanning to Word, OpenOffice, or Excel, and saving to PDF and Microsoft's XPS document-storage format. If you don't use the OCR Wizard, you can choose from a list of standard tasks listed in the background of the main editing window. I was puzzled for a moment by options to save to Netscape and Mozilla formats, but those options turned out to create standard HTML files. Output formats include multiple varieties of PDF, Microsoft Word, and formats. When you start Readiris, it optionally launches an OCR Wizard that walks you through the steps of getting a document from your scanner into whatever format you specify. Readiris can optionally create an XML-based index of these documents, but, unlike its rivals, it won't let you fine-tune the kind of processing it performs when it finds specific numbers in bar codes. Like its corporate-level rival products, it supports bar code processing, and can automatically route documents to specified folders if the document has a bar code that includes a specified number. Readiris comes in Pro and Corporate flavors both have the same basic document-reading capabilities, but the Corporate version (which I tested) adds the ability to perform OCR automatically on files dropped into a "watched folder," includes a feature that lets you create an XML-formatted document index, create encrypted PDFs, and streamlines processing of multiple documents. ![]() ![]() Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security Software. ![]() How Can Pilots Ensure Proper Communication with ATC?
